2021 Sustainable Interior Design Trends
Last year really made us think outside our own little boxes, homes, and communities as we were affected globally. 2021 brings that same feeling into interior design with sustainable trends.
To dig a little deeper into 2021 interior design trends overall, a large focus will be on sustainability. There will continue to be a lot of emphasis on minimalism when it comes to interior design. Think DIY but with reduce, reuse, recycle in mind. We are shifting from fast and mass production to natural materials and vintage pieces. Eco-friendly is expanding from a focus on the environment to include labor justice, especially overseas. Here is what we will see in 2021 in terms of interior design trends with a sustainable focus.
RECLAIMED:
It is no surprise that reclaimed wood makes the list. We are seeing this natural wood pop up in your smaller furniture pieces like shelves, side tables, and end tables but also in your larger furniture pieces like consoles, bookshelves, dining tables, and buffet tables. Reclaimed wood is an obvious choice when it comes to 2021 interior design trends and also years to come.
DIY UPCYCLING:
You’re going to have to use your creativity on this one. As materials for furniture remain high and slow due to the global crisis, upgrades on used pieces will be trending for quite some time. You might have to learn some new skills or make some new connections, either way, upcycling something you already own is much more practical and cost-effective than buying new. We highly recommend giving this 2021 interior design trend a try!

ORGANIC MATERIALS:
In the early 2000s, we saw a rise of synthetics in our fabrics. This included cheap fillers, like plastic, and heavily sprayed with chemicals for convenience (think stain repellants). As indoor air quality has been on the decline, designers will now opt for cleaner fabrics and materials for upholstery and flooring. 2021 will give us the turnaround of sustainable interior design with organic material, choosing sustainability and ethically made options over mass production.
RECYCLING:
This is a fun way to incorporate the vintage trend! Looking to get rid of a piece or inherit something. Check with friends and family. Most people have things sitting in storage that they’re happy to get rid of and you may just be holding onto something someone has been looking for! Donating and shopping thrift stores is always an option for in-good-condition items as well or fun upcycling projects! Recycling is also a cost-effective way to incorporate the 2021 colors of the year!
If last year taught us anything it proved our resilience. It demanded us to focus on our health. Health is not only what you put in your body but also around it. Last year we learned how to do the most with less, this year we have fun with it! Making a few swaps with these 2021 sustainable design trends will be sure to put you on the right track!
